Advertiser Staff

Big Island police will receive a $443,405 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, or COPS, to help combat the manufacture, use and distribution of methamphetamine, and to collaborate with other entities in the prevention and treatment of meth abuse, U.S. Rep. Mazie K. Hirono, D-Hawai'i, announced today in a news release.

"This is a targeted program that focuses on supporting communities with a significant meth problem based on data from the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration," Hirono said.

The COPS Methamphetamine Initiative will provide $43.6 million to 117 state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies.
