Two Hawaii surfers advance; Irons brothers ousted

Advertiser Staff

Hawaii surfers Fred Patacchia Jr. and Pancho Sullivan advanced to the fourth round while the Irons brothers were eliminated in the Boost Mobile Pro men's contest today.

The third round was completed in 2- to 3-foot waves at Lower Trestles, San Clemente, Calif.

Patacchia defeated Australia's Adrian Buchan in the third round, 12.27-10.9. Sullivan defeated South Africa's Ricky Basnett, 14.5-11.73.

"It picked up a little bit today, I had some bigger waves than yesterday," Sullivan said. "I really expected these sort of conditions at least one day for this event, so I have been practicing very hard to work with these conditions."

The Irons brothers from Kauai were upset in the third round.

Andy Irons, who entered the contest ranked No. 3 in the world, lost to wildcard entry Jordy Smith of South Africa.

"Andy is a very tough competitor," said Smith, who won the heat, 15.67-12.4. "He looks scary out there. He has absolutely no nerves and he just waits for the best waves each time and usually gets them. I guess I just got the better ones this time."

Brazil's Rodrigo Dornelles defeated Bruce Irons, 16.77-9.77.

The contest is the sixth of of 10 on the 2007 World Championship Tour.
