Rose named Kona's police officer of the year

Mekia Rose was honored yesterday on the Big Island by the Kona Crime Prevention Committee as Kona's top police officer for the 2006-2007 fiscal year.Rose received his award at a luncheon at King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel.
Rose was cited for his actions on March 26, 2006, and on June 23, 2006.
In the first case, Rose's "keen observation and quick thinking" led to the arrests of two juvenile runaways responsible for five felonies.
In the June case, Rose found three suspects responsible for robbing a man at the Kailua Pier. All three suspects were arrested and charged, and the stolen items were returned to the owner.
