Plants grow to $100 million business in Hawaii

Associated Press

HONOLULU — Nursery and other plant businesses in Hawai'i have topped $100 million for the second year in a row.

Sales of cut flowers, lei flowers, orchids, fresh foliage and potted plants set a record in 2005 of $101 million.

Agricultural statistics just out show the top-selling cut flowers in the Islands for 2006 were anthuriums. Bedding and garden plants saw an 11 percent growth last year.

The biggest selling plant categories are orchids at just over $22 million in sales, and landscape plants at nearly $21 million.

The only decreases were in lei flowers, which logged a 6 percent drop, and foliage sales, which are down 7 percent.
