Golf: Rain suspends play at Champions event in N.C.

Associated Press

CONOVER, N.C. — Heavy rain forced Champions Tour officials to suspend play Friday during the opening round of the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn Golf and Spa.

More than 2 inches of rain — the remnants of Hurricane Humberto, which came ashore in Texas on Thursday — fell in a four-hour period early Friday morning, forcing tournament officials to delay opening tee times by more than 2 1/2 hours.

Officials suspended opening-round play about 90 minutes later after another heavy downpour drenched Rock Barn's Robert Trent Jones course.

Only 48 of the 78 players competing in this weekend's tournament were on the course when play was suspended. Rod Spittle was the on-the-course leader at 3-under through five holes.
