Meeting today in Manoa to focus on feral pig hunting

Advertiser Staff

Lawmakers who represent the Manoa, Makiki and Tantalus areas will meet with area residents from 10 a.m. to noon today at the Manoa Elementary School cafeteria to discuss the state's feral pig hunting program.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources initiated the first pig hunt in 2002 in response to neighborhood complaints about feral pig rooting, subsequent mud runoff and trail system damage as well as watershed quality degradation and general public safety.

In 2002, 15 pigs were caught followed by 22 in the 2004-2005 program.

During 2007, 60 permits were issued to hunters and 53 hunting trips led to 57 pigs being taken.

Organizers said today's meeting will provide an update on the program and an opportunity for public input.
