Advertiser Staff

A man was charged today for allegedly punching a police officer trying to help him.

Wayne Harold Moten, 24, who listed a social agency in the Kalihi area as his residence, is being held in lieu of $11,000 bail for first-degree assault of a police officer.

Moten was lying in the roadway at the intersection of Kalia Road and Lewers Street in Waikiki at 1:20 a.m. after police had dispersed a large group.

As the officer tried to help him up, the 6-foot-2, 170-pound Moten allegedly punched the officer several times. The officer was treated at Straub Clinic & Hospital for bruises and cuts to his head and released.

Moten was arrested after being treated for injuries at The Queen's Medical Center. According to Hawai'i Criminal Justice Data Center records, Moten has one prior conviction.
