Man charged with copper theft near Honolulu airport

By Rod Ohira

A 39-year-old man arrested Thursday at a naval housing demolition project near Honolulu International Airport was charged yesterday with stealing copper.

Faleifa N. Mauga, who lists no permanent local address, was arrested by Kalihi Crime Reduction Unit officers who were staking out the construction project off Catlin Drive because of numerous theft complaints.

Mauga was arrested at Meyerkord Place and Catlin Drive at 9:08 p.m.

He was charged with second-degree theft and bail is $15,000 pending his initial appearance tomorrow at District Court.

The same construction site is where 54-year-old Tally A. Corpuz of Waipahu was killed in March when he suffered an electrical shock and fell from a utility pole while trying to cut copper wiring.
