SOCCER

HAAR BOOSTS BYUH

Senior captain Jill Haar scored three goals and Ashley Hunter scored two as Brigham Young-Hawai'i pulled away from Northwood (Texas), 6-1, yesterday in a women's match at La'ie.

The Seasiders (2-2-1) scored six unanswered goals after Klara Sandquist put Northwood (2-3-1) ahead in the 23rd minute.

Haar scored on a free kick at the 77th minute to make it 4-1, then stole the ball shortly after the ensuing kickoff and scored on a breakaway less than a minute later. Hunter added her second goal on a rebound shot in the 81st minute and Haar completed the hat trick off a pass from Stefanie Wright in the 83rd minute.

IN-LINE SKATING

NAGASAKO PLACES FIFTH

Maui's Thumper Nagasako placed fifth yesterday in the Action Sports Pro Tour vert in-line event at San Diego.

Japan's Yasutoko Takeshi scored 92 points to win the event that featured in-line skaters from 10 countries.

Nagasako, who sat out the 2006 season because of injuries that required surgeries, scored 81.75 points on the second of his two 50-second runs for his top score.

Pennsylvania's Marc Englehart finished second with 90.25 points, followed by Japan's Eito Yasutoko (87.50) and Tasmania's Shane Yost (86.75).

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

PUNAHOU GRADS LOSE

Sixth-seeded Matt Fuerbringer and Casey Jennings outlasted second-seeded Stein Metzger and Mike Lambert, 21-16, 26-28, 18-16, yesterday to earn a berth in today's final of the AVP Crocs Tour San Francisco Best of the Beach.

"Beating Lambo and Stein in a close three-game match is probably one of the top-five things in my beach volleyball career," said Fuerbringer, who will face third seeds Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal in the title match. "They're not only a great team, but they just win those matches. Stein and Lambo are clutch players. I think we just had faith that we were going to win, no matter what happened."

Metzger and Lambert, both Punahou School graduates, will play top-seeded Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser in the third-place match.
