GOING VEGAS
Football season kicks off in Vegas

By Anthony Curtis

Monday-night football and Las Vegas have become an institution.

This year, three casinos offer versions of the free-hot-dog-and-beer deal that's been popular over the past several years. At Sam's Town, Boulder Station and Suncoast, everyone gets a dog and a beer just for showing up. Doors open about one hour before game time. Other good venues for the game include Sunset Station, Monte Carlo, Gold Coast, Orleans and Rampart. And on Sundays, the Las Vegas Hilton sponsors "NFL Central," with big screens, the sports book, and dollar hot dogs and beers.

MNF BLACKJACK: The Rampart is holding an Elimination Blackjack mini tournament in conjunction with the Ultimate Blackjack Tour every Monday night through the end of the year. The entry fee is $50, and all money is returned in prizes. Also, winners qualify for an end-of-the-year championship with $15,000 in (additional) prize money. Topping things off, all players get free food and drink for the duration of the football game. Playing sessions are at 6 and 7 p.m.

TAXI FARE RISE: As of Oct. 1, passengers will be charged an extra 10 cents for the initial cost of hiring a cab, raising the "drop fee" to $3.30. The wait-time charge (the cost per hour for time spent traveling slower than 8-12 mph) will also increase, to $28 from $22. An additional 20 cents per mile on the standard per-mile rate (currently $2) will be offset by the fact that the 20 cent-per-mile fuel surcharge has been abolished.

Q. Are there any free NFL football contests this year?

A. Only two casinos are running freebies this year. Terrible's free weekly contest pays out $1,500 in prizes and the Leroy's sports books host one that pays out $5,000 per week.
