'Big Read Hawaii' to feature 'The Joy Luck Club' novel

Advertiser Staff

In celebration of "The Big Read Hawaii Project," the Hawai'i State Library will host an adult story program on Wednesdays featuring Amy Tan's best-selling novel "The Joy Luck Club," from Sept. 26 – Nov. 21.

Admission is free.

Special guest readers are scheduled to read aloud portions of this book on successive Wednesdays, in the library's Language, Literature, and History Section from noon to 1 p.m. on these dates: Sept. 26, Oct. 3, Oct. 10, Oct. 17, Oct. 24, Oct. 31, Nov. 7, Nov. 14, and Nov. 21.

The list of guest readers is being finalized and will be announced at a later date.

"The Joy Luck Club," published in 1990, is a tale of love and the constant need to adapt in order to keep that love alive, as told through the words and lives of four Chinese immigrant mothers and their very westernized daughters.

The Big Read Hawaii Project is coordinated by the Hawaii Capital Cultural District and its partner affiliates — Hawaii Council for the Humanities, Manoa Foundation, State Dept. of Human Services, and the Hawaii State Public Library System.
