Comments on Navy's draft EIS for Hawaii project due

Advertiser Staff

Today is the deadline for public comment on the Navy's draft environmental impact statement/overseas environmental impact statement for the Hawai'i Range Complex.

The Navy considers the Hawai'i Range Complex a unique and vital area for training sailors, according to a news release from the Pacific Fleet public affairs office issued Friday.

"The training conducted — such as under way fuel replenishments, helicopter qualifications, missile exercises, and maneuvering tactics and active sonar for underseas warfare training — in the Hawaiian waters operating area helped (USS Lake Erie) sailors conduct numerous missions while deployed in support of the global war on terrorism," said Cmdr. Richard Martel, executive officer of the cruiser Lake Erie.

The Navy held a statewide series of public hearings in August to gather comments for the draft statement.

The draft statement and information on the Hawai'i Range Complex is available online at www.govsupport.us/hrc

Public comments may be submitted by e-mail to deis_hrc@govsupport.us or by mail to Public Affairs Officer, Pacific Missile Range Facility, P.O. Box 128, Kekaha, HI, 96752.
