Waipahu teen wins Aloha Tower's 'ukulele contest

Sixteen year old Rylan Tokioka of Waipahu is the winner of Aloha Tower Marketplace's second annual Ukulele Contest, held yesterday. Tokioka beat out 21 other contestants for the title, and will become a representative of the 2008 Aloha Festivals. In addition, he won a Kamaka concert 'ukulele (retail value $700) and a concert 'ukulele case from the Hawaiian Ukulele Company.All participants were judged on Instrumental Ability, Stage Presence, Rhythm/Timing, and Overall Performance.
Second place went to Gabriel Goebbert of Kihei, Maui, who won a KoAloha concert 'ukulele as well as the "Player's Choice Award," which was a Sonny D concert 'ukulele. Third place went to Brandon Lacanaria of Wai'anae, who won a Leolani Mahogany concert 'ukulele. Both winners also received a concert 'ukulele case from the Hawaiian Ukulele Company.
