Stocks end down as interest-rate decision awaited

Stocks ended moderately lower Monday as investors awaited the Federal Reserve's decision on interest rates. While Wall Street generally expects Fed policymakers will lower rates at Tuesday's meeting, investors are unclear about what the Fed might indicate in its accompanying economic assessment. In addition, appeared uneasy about bank earnings due later in the week and as Northern Rock PLC, Britain's fifth-largest mortgage lender, saw its stock plunge and customers withdraw billions of dollars after it issued a profit warning Friday and drew on emergency funds from the Bank of England.

  • The Dow Jones industrial average fell 39.10, or 0.29 percent, to 13,403.42.

  • The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 7.60, or 0.51 percent, to 1,476.65.

  • The Nasdaq composite index fell 20.52, or 0.79 percent, to 2,581.66.

    For the year:

  • The Dow is up 940.27, or 7.54 percent.

  • The S&P is up 58.35, or 4.11 percent.

  • The Nasdaq is up 166.37, or 6.89 percent.
