Kauai Superferry hearing scheduled for Friday

A hearing aimed at keeping Hawaii Superferry from coming to Kaua'i until an environmental assessment is completed is scheduled to begin Friday morning before Circuit Court Judge Randal Valenciano.

A similar hearing is currently under way on Maui.

Valenciano denied a temporary restraining order in the Kauai case on Sept. 7, but did not rule on the environmental, public health and constitutional issues raised by attorneys Daniel Hempey and Greg Meyers, who represent 1000 Friends of Kauai and Rich Hoeppner.

Gov. Linda Lingle last week announced the Superferry will resume service to Kaua'i on Sept. 26, its first scheduled voyage to the island since Aug. 27, when protestors blocked Nawiliwili Harbor and forced the vessel to return to Honolulu without docking.
