Recycling fair, sustainability summit set for this week

The City and County of Honolulu will this week hold its third annual Discover Recycling Fair at the Neal S. Blaisdell Arena, noon to 3:30 p.m., Thursday and Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday.

On Friday, the city is also co-sponsoring the Hawaii 2050 Youth Sustainability Summit in the Neal S. Blaisdell Center's Pikake Room for about 250 high school students. Other sponsors are the Hawaii 2050 Sustainability Task Force, Hawaii Institute for Public Affairs and Girl Scouts of Hawaii.

At the summit, students will express their ideas and concerns about Hawaii's future, participate in interactive group activities designed to help them understand the complex issues facing Hawaii, and discuss their roles and responsibilities in helping shape the state's future course of action.

Features at the recycling fair include:

  • Recycled products made in Hawai'i;

  • Tips for setting up recycling collection systems at schools, condos, commercial buildings and home;

  • How clubs and organizations can raise funds through recycling;

  • Exhibits by local recycling companies, services and programs;

  • Displays of recycling equipment and technology;

  • Entertainment, including music and a Trash2Fashion Show;

  • Recycling education center;

  • Recycled art center.
