NFL: Falcons sign Leftwich after 0-2 start

The Atlanta Falcons today signed quarterback Byron Leftwich after losing their first two games of the National Football League season with fill-ins for suspended Michael Vick.

Falcons coach Bobby Petrino said Joey Harrington would remain the starting quarterback and Chris Redman would be No. 2.

Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed in a news release from the Falcons, who have generated a league-worst 10 points so far. Atlanta has struggled without Vick, who was suspended indefinitely by the league last month when he pleaded guilty to a federal conspiracy charge related to dogfighting.

The 27-year-old Leftwich, who is entering his fifth year in the NFL, was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars just before the season began. He was chosen by the Jaguars in the first round of the 2003 NFL draft.

In four years with Jacksonville, Leftwich had a 24-20 record and completed 789 of 1,344 passes for 9,042 yards and 51 touchdowns.

The Falcons also waived quarterback Casey Bramlet.
