Hawaii governor breaks ground on airport parking

Gov. Linda Lingle helped break ground today for a long-awaited new 1,800-stall parking garage at Honolulu International Airport.And she announced the release of $75,532,466 for four projects at the Honolulu airport as part of a $2.3 billion, 12-year airports modernization plan.
The money will also pay for construction of the second phase of a new in-line baggage screening system and improvements to the airport's flight information display system and public-address system.
"Honolulu International Airport is our state's busiest gateway. Its modernization is key to ensuring the long-term vitality of traveling to Hawai'i and between our islands," Lingle said.
She said new parking garage will cost $16,229,000 and be at the existing open parking lot between the Interisland Terminal and Overseas Terminal parking garages. The eight-level structure will provide more than 1,800 parking stalls, helping to meet the need for additional parking stalls at the Interisland Terminal.
Construction is scheduled to end in December 2008.
