CFB: Stanford LB gives up football after neck injury

Associated Press

STANFORD, Calif. — Stanford linebacker Fred Campbell will stop playing football after undergoing surgery to repair a fractured vertebrae in his neck.

Campbell, the Cardinal's starting middle linebacker, was injured in the Stanford's game Saturday against San Jose State. He underwent the operation yesterday at Stanford Hospital.

"I know how much of a disappointment this is for Fred," coach Jim Harbaugh said. "But we're very proud of him and what he has accomplished and what he has meant to our team. We're relieved that his neurological health will be normal and that he will have a full and complete recovery."

"Fred is a warrior," Harbaugh said, "and he will always be a part of our team."

Campbell redshirted in 2005 before playing nine games last season.
