The University of Hawai'i has been awarded a $430,000 National Science Foundation grant to host a four-day conference to promote scientific competitiveness in Hawai'i, 26 other states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The 20th annual NSF EPSCoR (Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research) National Conference will kick off Nov. 5 in Waikoloa on the Big Island.
"Like many other smaller states and territories, Hawai'i for many years was at a competitive disadvantage in its efforts to secure NSF grants," U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Inouye said in a news release issued today.
"Through the EPSCoR program, Hawai'i has become competitive, particularly in the field of evolutionary ecology and genetics by focusing on the unique ecosystems that make Hawai'i a natural laboratory," he said.
Hawai'is EPSCoR team has received competitive NSF grants totaling $18 million, and developed a wireless environmental monitoring system that is able to collect real-time data from the world's most remote and rugged areas, according to the release.
