35 arrested for DUI on Big Island last week

Continuing DUI roadblocks and patrols on the Big Island netted 35 motorists who were arrested for drunk driving last week, police said.Eleven of the drivers were involved in accidents and five were under the age of 21. DUI arrests on the Big Island are up 7 percent from the same time a year ago, with 946 arrests in 2007 compared to 888 in 2006.
Police said there have been 1,497 major accidents so far this year on the Big Island compared with 1,817 during the same period last year, a decrease of 18 percent.
So far this year, there have been 26 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 27 during the same period last year.
