Maui council may defer talks on housing/retail project

The Maui News

WAILUKU – Committee deliberations of the proposed Honua'ula development could be deferred until mid-October, Maui County Council Land Use Committee Chairman Mike Molina said Tuesday.

The panel continues it's work on the project's land use applications at 1:30 p.m. today in Council Chambers, but as other matters need the committee's attention, Molina said he would suggest a deferral of Honua'ula after today's session.

The committee would probably take up the Honua'ula land use requests again next month, he said.

Since July, the Land Use Committee has been reviewing the request to amend the project district plans for the 670-acre property to provide for 1,400 housing units, commercial space and a private golf course.

In the committee's meeting on Monday, Molina said members discussed transfer of ownership issues, conditions for preserving the dry land forest and a condition that land would be provided for the Maui County Department of Fire and Public Safety and the Maui Police Department.

No general consensus was reached on the three conditions discussed, Molina said.

The committee review involves about 33 proposed conditions on approval of zoning for the project district.

The request involves zoning and a project district amendment to the Kihei-Makena Community Plan.
