NFL: Ex-UH kicker Elam earns weekly AFC honor

Advertiser Staff

Former University of Hawaii kicker Jason Elam of the Denver Broncos was named American Football Conference special teams player of the week, the NFL announced today.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Derek Anderson of the Cleveland Browns and Indianapolis Colts safety Bob Sanders were named AFC players of the week in offense and defense, respectively.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre (offense), Tampa Bay linebacker Barrett Ruud (defense) and Chicago Bears punt returner-kick returner Devin Hester (special teams) received NFC honors.

Elam kicked his second game-winning field goal in consecutive weeks, connecting on a 23-yarder in a 23-20 overtime win over the Raiders. Before proceeding into overtime, Elam tied the game in the fourth quarter with a 20-yard field goal with 2:18 remaining. In his 15th season, this is Elam's fifth Player of the Week Award.
