Drug enforcer honored as top Big Island police officer

Officer John J. Weber of the East Hawai'i Vice Section, who initiated 393 criminal cases during fiscal 2006-2007, was named the Big Island's police officer of the year by the Hawai'i State Law Enforcement Officials Association.

Weber received his award Sept. 4 at a banquet held on Kaua'i.

According to a Big Island police release issued yesterday, Weber arrested 87 suspects who were charged with 355 offenses in the fiscal year that recently ended.

The cases were primarily generated by 46 search warrants he drafted. His warrants led to the seizure of large quantities of marijuana, crystal methamphetamine, "black tar" heroin, cocaine and LSD, as well as 46 firearms and $526,147 in assets for forfeiture.

Weber built "quality investigative cases" that targeted drug growers and dealers rather then just users, said his supervising lieutenant, Samuel Jelsma.
