Tennis: Golovin, Bammer advance at Slovenia Open

PORTOROZ, Slovenia — Top-seeded Tatiana Golovin of France reached the quarterfinals of the Slovenia Open today by beating Karin Knapp of Italy 6-4, 6-3.The 19-year-old Golovin, ranked 19th in the world, saved five break points.
"I just used the opportunities that I had," Golovin said.
Golovin will play either Meilen Tu of the United States or Croatian qualifier Ana Vrljic on Friday in the quarterfinals. Tu advanced to the second round by beating Jelena Kostanic Tosic of Croatia 6-4, 7-6 (3).
Second-seeded Sybille Bammer of Austria also reached the quarterfinals, beating Elena Likhovtseva of Russia 6-3, 6-2.
Bammer will face either seventh-seeded Gisela Dulko of Argentina — who won her first tournament in Budapest, Hungary, this year — or Elena Vesnina of Russia.
The seventh-seeded Dulko beat Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Switzerland 6-3, 6-4, and Vesnina defeated 16-year-old qualifier Polona Hercog of Slovenia 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-4.
Fifth-seeded Vera Zvonareva of Russia needed three sets to beat Nathalie Dechy of France 6-0, 5-7, 6-4.
Zvonareva will face eighth-seeded Vera Dushevina of Russia in the quarterfinals. Dushevina defeated Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-4.
