Felon faces federal prosecution on gun charges

Advertiser Staff

A 43-year-old 'Ewa man arrested on suspicion of firing a shotgun at a woman during a dispute between neighbors Aug. 16 is facing federal prosecution on firearm charges.

Police confirmed today that a federal arrest warrant has been issued for Jake Jesus Mendoza Sr., a felon with 27 prior convictions who will be held at HPD's central receiving cellblock overnight and taken to District Court tomorrow on two outstanding petty misdemeanor warrants totalling $900.

The federal warrant stems from Mendoza's arrest for two firearm violations connected to the Aug. 16 incident and his criminal history.

Federal agents are expected to take custody of Mendoza after his District Court appearance.

Mendoza is considered to be a flight risk, police said.

He fled the scene of the Aug. 16 shooting in 'Ewa Beach and was not arrested until earlier this week in Kailua.

Police said that on Aug. 16 at 10 p.m., Medoza was arguing with a woman, 35, and took a shotgun from his garage, allegedly firing a round at the victim.

No injuries were reported, but pellets struck the rear of a vehicle near where the victim was standing, police said.

Mendoza has been released pending further investigation of first-degree terroristic threatening and reckless endangering, second-degree terroristic threatening, third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, and two counts of third-degree assault stemming from the Aug. 16 incident, police said.
