Honolulu police chief makes first appearance in month

Advertiser Staff

In his first public appearance since a celebration for the Honolulu Police Department's 75th anniversary on Aug. 11, Chief Boisse Correa today attended the monthly meeting of the Police Commission.

After being in the closed meeting for an hour and a half, Correa exited the meeting at police headquarters and confirmed to reporters that he is currently on paid injured leave.

Walking under his own power, Correa said doctors ordered him to remain at home until his health improves. He would not elaborate on his health problems, other than to say he suffered an injury while on duty.

Correa declined to discuss a timetable for his return, but said the only reason he was at the police department headquarters today was to attend the police commission meeting.

HPD has not made an official announcement about Correa's condition or his working from home for the past month.

The Police Commission is made up of seven members appointed by the mayor who have the authority to appoint and remove the police chief.

Correa is 61 and has been chief since 2004.
