Roosevelt girls volleyball coach Bryan Camello got that complete game he was looking for ... and an easy victory.

Meleana Yamashiro had nine kills, Emily Maeda added five and No. 6 Roosevelt had nine aces in a 25-15, 25-19 victory over No. 5 Moanalua last night in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Division I match at Moanalua.

"They are steady, leaders on the court," Camello said. "They do what they're supposed to do within our system, and the team relies on their performance, and their play and their attitude."

Roosevelt (5-1) was coming off its only loss of the season, a three-game defeat to undefeated Kahuku last Tuesday.

After the loss, Camello said his team was lacking in the space "six inches between the ears."

Not a problem this time.

"We came in with the mindset, we need to take this game," Camello said. "I'm proud of them how they performed; how they stayed focused throughout the whole match."

Seven Rough Riders had aces against Moanalua (4-2), which was once again playing without two-time Advertiser All-State player Kaleinani Kabalis.

"We knew that there were certain players who weren't as good at passing," Camello said. "Because Kabalis wasn't on the court, it makes them more one-dimensional."

The tough serving also led to a lot of free balls for the Rough Riders, and setters Darcie Anderson and Kanoe Pupuhi were able to utilize all their options.

"In practice, we serve tough," Maeda said. "We're not afraid of making errors. We go all out."

In the first game, Roosevelt jumped to leads of 5-1 and 15-5, and was never threatened.

Yamashiro had six of the Rough Riders' 12 kills in the game.

The second game was tied at 3, before Roosevelt went on a 17-4 run. Na Menehune got as close as 22-18.

Kabalis missed her second consecutive match because of academic reasons, and Moanalua coach Tommy Lake expects her to miss one more. Moanalua has lost both matches she's missed.

"Right now everyone is looking for someone else to do it for us," Lake said.
