Mililani structure collapse hurts 5, sends 1 to hospital

Five construction workers were treated for injuries and one was taken to Wahiawa General Hospital today following a structure collapse at Mililani Technology Park.

Honolulu Fire Department personnel, who got the call shortly after 10 a.m., used a forklift to remove one worker from the building's second floor, said HFD spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig.

"We treated him and packaged him on a backboard, and he was removed with the help of a forklift down to the ground," Seelig said.

The worker was transported to the hospital in stable condition, according to Honolulu Emergency Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic.

The other four workers were treated for minor injuries at the scene, officials said. None of workers, including the hospitalized man, had been trapped by the collapse, Seelig said.

The workers, all men, had been constructing the steel framing on a new self-storage facility being built at the campus-like park. Witnesses said the second-floor steel framing collapse appeared to have been caused by a strong gust of wind.
