$30,500 penalty for Hawaii company in recycling case

Advertiser Staff

Lenox Metals LLC is facing a $30,500 penalty imposed by the state Department of Health for allegedly dumping computer monitors in the Waimanalo Gulch Municipal Landfill and failing to comply with record-keeping requirements.

The state said it had issued a notice of violation and order against Lenox Metals for the alleged violations of the state hazardous waste laws. It said Lenox has requested a hearing in the matter.

The Department of Health claims Lenox was paid a fee for accepting about 48,400 pounds of computer monitors from several businesses between January and November 2005. The state said Lenox represented itself as a company that would properly recycle the monitors, which are environmentally hazardous because they contain lead, mercury and other materials.
