University of California regents OK tuition hikes

Associated Press

DAVIS, Calif. — The price of going to professional school at the University of California is on its way up.

The system's Board of Regents approved fee increases for law, medical and other professional schools at a meeting in Davis Thursday.

The hikes break with tradition because some schools in the 10-campus system would be charging significantly more than lesser-known branches.

Opponents said the move is a bad idea that will deter low-income students and isn't right for a public university.

But supporters argue the schools have suffered from state budget cuts and need the extra money to maintain quality.
