Thousands of Hawaii students to be at recycling fair

Advertiser Staff

More than 5,000 students and teachers from 40 schools will be taking part in the city's third annual Discover Recycling Fair that takes place today through Saturday at the Neal S. Blaisdell Arena.

The fair runs from noon to 3:30 p.m. today and tomorrow, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and is open to the public.

The timing for this year's fair is good, with the city introducing curbside recycling to 20,000 households in Hawai'i Kai and Mililani in a pilot project that Mayor Mufi Hannemann said is the first step toward islandwide recycling.

Some of the fair's highlights include:

  • Recycled products made in Hawai'i.

  • Tips for setting up recycling collection systems at schools, condos, commercial buildings and home.

  • How clubs and organizations can raise funds through recycling.

  • Exhibits by local recycling companies, services and programs.

  • Displays of recycling equipment and technology.

  • Entertainment, including music and a Trash2Fashion Show.

  • Recycling Education Center.

  • Recycled Art Center.
