PROBATION FOR PUNCHING COACH

A man who assaulted an assistant coach after a Castle High School football game last season was sentenced yesterday to five years probation and 100 hours of community service, in addition to being ordered to pay about $900 in fines and seek enrollment in anger-management classes.

Reid Aiwohi was charged with second-degree assault for punching Castle assistant coach David Mahelona in the face after a playoff game against 'Aiea in the fall of 2006. Aiwohi pleaded no contest.

In a letter to the court, Mahelona did not request jail time for Aiwohi, a former Castle teammate and close friend.

But Circuit Court judge Michael Wilson emphasized the important role coaches like Mahelona play in the community and the need for them to be protected against such incidents.
