The state is levying a $47,500 penalty against Pacific Shipyards International and a $22,000 penalty for Philip Services Corp. for alleged violations of hazardous-waste rules. The state Department of Health said it filed a notice that alleges Pacific Shipyards could not show proper disposal of two, 2-ton sacks of sand blast grit contaminated with the heavy metal cadmium. The state also alleged the Pier 41 business stored two 2-ton sacks of grit contaminated with lead and hazardous waste paints and solvents beyond a 90-day storage limit.
The Department of Health also alleged that Philip Services operated a used oil transporter/transfer facility without a permit and failure to provide secondary containment for used oil. It also claimed the Kapolei-company didn't label the containers with "Used Oil" signs.
The state said it's also ordered the companies to comply with hazardous-waste rules. Both of the companies have requested a hearing, the state said.
