CFB: Glanville's Portland State squad falls to Aztecs

Associated Press

SAN DIEGO — Kevin O'Connell completed 19 of 31 passes for career highs of 443 yards and five touchdowns today as San Diego State beat Portland State 52-17.

Four of O'Connell's TD passes came in the first half, including three to Brett Swain, who finished the game with six receptions for a career-high 224 yards in the first win of the year for the Aztecs (1-2).

Portland State (1-3) pulled within a touchdown twice — at 14-7 and 21-14 — on a pair of one-yard TD runs by Olaniyi Sobomehin.

But after the Vikings' second score, O'Connell came back on the next play from scrimmage and hooked up with Swain on a 75-yard touchdown pass.

Former University of Hawai'i defensive coordinator Jerry Glanville is the head coach of Portland State.

Swain also scored on a 30-yard TD pass from O'Connell in the first quarter and a 53-yarder in the second quarter as the Aztecs took a 35-14 lead at he half.

Sandwiched around O'Connell's three TD passes to Swain was an eight-yard touchdown strike to Darren Mougey in the first quarter and a 62-yard TD pass to Vincent Brown in the fourth.

Garrett Palmer, who kicked all seven PATs for the Aztecs to run his streak to 64 straight, also kicked a 36-yard field goal in the third quarter.

Brandon Bornes and Alston Umuolo had the two Aztec touchdowns on the ground with Umuolo running his own team's fumble into the end zone from 10 yards out for the game's final touchdown.

Quarterback Brian White completed 36 of 53 for 408 yards with three interceptions for Portland State.

Chris Chalmers kicked a 47-yard field goal for the Vikings in the fourth quarter
