The Coast Guard was still searching at 10 p.m. tonight for possible occupants of a three-person kayak found floating off Diamond Head this afternoon.

Coast Guard officials do not know if anyone was aboard the kayak or if it simply drifted away from shore, said spokesman Michael DeNyse.

A caller reported the 12-foot orange Ocean Kayak drifting about 2 miles off Diamond Head about 2 p.m. There was enough diving and other gear in the kayak for at least two people, DeNyse said.

However, there have been no reports of missing kayakers or divers, he said.

The Coast Guard used a 47-foot rescue boat and helicopter to search an area from Diamond Head to Waikiki. The crews are using night vision equipment to continue the search tonight.

Anyone who can identify the kayak or its owners is asked to call the Coast Guard at 842-2600.
