CFB: Appalachian State's win streak comes to an end

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Now Appalachian State knows what Michigan felt like.

Wofford upset Appalachian, 42-31, today, serving notice that although Appalachian upset Michigan earlier this season, the Mountaineers won't simply cruise through their own Southern Conference.

From the first quarter on — when Wofford intercepted Armanti Edwards on the third snap of the game and later scored a touchdown on a 49-yard pass — this game was studded with dazzling plays. The Terriers stayed in front almost the entire way, controlling the game with their option-style rushing attack that racked up 291 yards on the ground and 431 total yards.

"Every time we needed a big play, we got one," said Wofford coach Mike Ayers, whose team ended Appalachian's 17-game winning streak, the longest in Division I.

Entering the game, Wofford was ranked No.13 in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA). Appalachian was No.1 and hadn't lost a game in the Southern Conference since 2005, when it was beaten by Furman but came back to win the first of its two straight national titles.

"We know that we have an `X' on our chest and it will be there all year because of what we've done," Appalachian quarterback Trey Elder said. "It's not like we took them lightly. Wofford is always good."

Elder, the ASU backup quarterback, had to try to win the game when Edwards left early in the third quarter after re-injuring his left (throwing) shoulder. Elder threw an interception that led to one Wofford TD, but also directed two touchdown drives.

With 2:15 left in the game, Appalachian recovered a Wofford fumble at its own 7. Down 35-31, Elder and Appalachian were 93 yards from a possible win.

But ASU (3-1, 0-1 Southern Conference) only made it as far as its own 36 before losing the ball on downs. Then Wofford (3-1, 1-0) clinched it with a 27-yard TD run by Kevious Johnson with 38 seconds to go.

"They executed well and we tackled badly," Appalachian coach Jerry Moore said.

Wofford's fans stormed the field after the game ended but left the goalposts alone. They seemed happy to celebrate by jumping around the Terrier players, who seemed a bit dazed at what they had done.

"Since I've been here," Wofford senior safety Dan Tavani said, "I've never seen anything like this."
