Tafralis was 35 of 48 for a career-high 426 yards and three touchdowns for the Spartans (1-3, 1-0 Western Athletic Conference), who gained 524 yards in the game.

Derrvin Speight rushed for 99 yards and one touchdown and Kevin Robinson returned a kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown for the Aggies (0-4, 0-1), who still had time to tie it or retake the lead, but botched the kickoff return.

The Spartans were penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct after the touchdown and the kickoff was pushed back to the 15-yard line. The kick was high and bounced near midfield, where the Spartans jumped on it before any of the Aggies.

San Jose State ran out the clock from there.

The Aggies trailed for much of the game before Speight put them ahead with a 1-yard touchdown run with 6:12 to go in the fourth quarter, capping an 18-play, 92-yard drive that lasted more than 8 minutes.

San Jose State responded with a drive to the Utah State 30, but Caleb Taylor intercepted a pass from Tafralis with 2:22 left to play. The Spartans got the ball back at their own 17-yard line when Utah State punted with 1:50 left.

Richmond finished with 10 catches for 180 yards and two touchdowns.

San Jose State led 9-0 early in the second quarter when Kevin Robinson returned a kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown for the Aggies.
