Wahine soccer absorbs first loss

Cal State Northridge handed the University of Hawai'i women's soccer team its first loss of the season with a 2-1 double-overtime decision yesterday in Northridge, Calif. Carrie Faith Murphy scored the winning goal in the 103rd minute to give the Matadors (2-4-1) the come-from-behind win over the Rainbow Wahine (5-1-1).

UH took a 1-0 lead into halftime on Nicole Mikula's goal. The Matadors tied the game at 1 with 1:12 left in regulation.

The defeat was UH's fifth straight road loss, dating back to last season.

UH faces No. 7 UCLA tomorrow in Los Angeles.


VOLLEYBALL

U.S. MEN WIN CROWN

Riley Salmon made 16 kills and Reid Priddy had 14 kills to lead the United States to its third consecutive NORCECA men's volleyball championship with a 25-20, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23 victory over Puerto Rico last night in Anaheim, Calif.

Both teams qualified for the FIVB World Cup in November in Japan, which will determine three of the competitors for the 2008 Olympics.

Honolulu's Clay Stanley added 13 kills and David Lee made five blocks for the United States, which is fifth in the FIVB world rankings and won NORCECA gold medals in 2005 and 2003.

U.S. WOMEN IN FINAL

The U.S. Women's National Volleyball team secured a spot in the NORCECA Women's Continental Championship gold medal match by defeating Canada 25-18, 25-11, 25-23 in the semifinal round last night in Winnipeg, Canada.

Former University of Hawai'i standout Heather Bown had six kills and a block for seven points for Team USA. Another former UH star, setter Robyn Ah Mow-Santos added a kill and ace as she also directed the Team USA offense to a .344 attack efficiency and 49 percent kill ratio.

Team USA, the three-time defending NORCECA champion, will face Cuba in the gold medal match today.

UH-HILO, CU WIN

Josimara Pinheiro had 17 kills as UH-Hilo beat Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 30-23, 30-25, 30-23, last night in La'ie in the Pacific West Conference women's volleyball opener for both teams.

The Seasiders (4-5) were led by Noelle Filimoeatu, who had 18 kills. UH-Hilo is 7-4 overall.

Samantha Miller had 16 kills as Chaminade beat Hawai'i Pacific in the PacWest opener for both squads, 32-30, 30-28, 26-30, 30-28, last night at McCabe Gym.

Chaminade is 8-1 and Hawai'i Pacific is 5-7.


GOLF

DWYER TIED FOR 72ND

Australian Anna Rawson shot a tournament-low 5-under-par 67 to take a one-shot lead after the third round of the LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament at Mission Hills Country Club, in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Kailua's Bridget Keala Dwyer fired a 76 and is tied for 72nd, at 10-over 226, going into today's final round.

The top-30 players and ties at the end of today's round advance to the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament in Florida, Nov. 28 to Dec. 2.

The Rancho Mirage qualifier is the first of the LPGA Tour's two sectional qualifying events. The second is Oct. 2 to 5 in Venice, Fla.

The top-30 finishers and ties from the Florida qualifier will join the California sectional qualifiers, current LPGA Tour members attempting to improve their status and players who finished sixth through 15th on the final Futures money list at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament.
