Andy Irons advances at Quiksilver Pro in France

Advertiser Staff

Kauai's Andy Irons advanced to the third round of the Quiksilver Pro France today at Hossegor, France.

Irons defeated Spain's Aritz Aranburu, 16.16-6.5, in today's second round. Irons received a near-perfect score of 9.83 for making it through a long barrel in the closing minutes of the heat.

"The conditions were pretty touch and go," Irons said. "The tide got really high and there were not many good scoring waves out there. I think I had a 3.0 and a 4.0 with eight minutes to go and Aritz had some big scores in the first round so I knew it would be hard."

Irons, who is ranked No. 4 on the World Championship Tour, was the only Hawai'i surfer to complete a heat yesterday.

Three others — Bruce Irons, Fred Patacchia Jr., and Pancho Sullivan — have second-round heats upcoming. The Quiksilver Pro France is the seventh of 10 events on the 2007 World Championship Tour.
