Two killed in Big Island head-on collision

Advertiser Staff

Two people were killed early Sunday morning in a traffic accident on the Big Island on Route 190.

Big Island police said that Randy W. Ahuna of Kamuela and Charlotte L. Paris of Kealakekua died in the crash, which was reported at 12:08 a.m.

The crash was near the 4-mile marker. Police said that Ahuna was driving a Dodge pickup truck in the Waimea direction when he crossed the centerline and collided head-on with Paris' 2005 Subaru heading in the Kona direction.

Ahuna was pronounced dead at North Hawaii Community Hospital at 1:25 a.m.

Paris died at the scene, police said. She was pronounced dead at Kona Community Hospital at 3:50 a.m.

Police said they do not believe speed or alcohol were involved, but "driver fatigue" may have played a role. Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

Police have opened a negligent homicide investigation and ordered autopsies.

Anyone with information is asked to call Officer Marvin Troutman at 808-326-4646, ext. 229.
