Hawai'i junior defensive lineman Josh Leonard played last night's game against Charleston Southern with both feet planted firmly on the turf but at least one eye drifting to the stands.

Leonard and girlfriend Christa Sariaba are expecting their first child and Leonard was prepared to miss the game if Sariaba went into labor.

They were given yesterday as a due date.

Sariaba attended the game, despite contractions that bounced between six and eight minutes apart.

"I caught myself looking over into the stands, just checking to see if she was still there," Leonard said.

The couple are expecting a boy, whom they will name Blayne.

WARRIORS UNVEIL HA'A TO HOME CROWD AT ALOHA

In an auspicious start to last night's contest, the Warriors performed the ha'a at home for the first time.

The dance, which replaces the popular and controversial haka, was first performed at the UH-UNLV game last week.

Senior linebacker Brad Kalilimoku led the squad in the performance following pre-game warm-ups and after the Charleston Southern players and coaches had left the field.

GRAUNKE IGNORES FANS' CALLS IN SECOND QUARTER

Midway through the second quarter, after consecutive incomplete passes by Tyler Graunke, fans began chanting, "We want Colt!"

Graunke told The Associated Press that he did not hear the taunts. However, after the chant started, he followed up with completions of 11 and 12 yards on two of the next three plays.

"When I'm out there, I'm in the zone. I didn't hear any fans booing. I didn't hear anything going on," Graunke told AP, adding that he expected to start "a little shaky," since it had been so long since he last started.

AND WHAT'S MORE . . .

  • Seniors C.J. Hawthorne and Rustin Saole served as last night's team captains for UH.

  • Of all the big hits in last night's game, no tackle got a bigger ovation than kicker Dan Kelly's takedown of running back Alexius Ferguson on a punt early in the second quarter. Ferguson shook off two UH defenders and ran 23 yards before Kelly tackled him.

  • Last night's game drew a turnstile crowd of 34,101.
