Suspects who crashed car into rock fountain caught

Advertiser Staff

A man and a woman who allegedly fled an accident scene at the Kapi'olani and South King Street intersection were found at the bus stop adjacent to the state Capitol this morning.

The accident was reported at 3:42 a.m. Witnesses told police they saw a man and woman flee the older, black Chevrolet Iroc-Z that police found smashed into the rocks of the fountain located at the Kapi'olani intersection.

Witnesses said the car was heard speeding down Kapi'olani toward South Street, followed by the sound of a car putting on its brakes and a loud crash.

One witness who saw the man and woman flee helped identify the suspects. Another described what she saw and heard. The suspects were found within 15 minutes of the accident being called in.

The car's front end suffered significant damage, but no other parties were injured and the fountain appeared to have no damage.

Police did not say immediately if speed or alcohol were involved.
