Preliminary autopsy results on two teenagers found yesterday in Lowrie Ditch on Maui indicates the two apparently drowned, but the final results are pending toxicology and microscopic studies, Maui police said. The autopsy confirmed no evidence of foul play, police said.
The two were identified as 13-year-old Lucy Smith, of Wailuku, and 13-year-old Cherie Hurd, of Ha'iku, Maui police said.
However, friends said Smith was 14 and Hurd was 15.
Both were students at King Kekaulike High School.
The body of one girl was found about 1:25 p.m. yesterday east of the intersection at Haiku Road and West Kuiaha Road in Ha'iku. The second girl was found about 5:30 p.m. near the Pico Tract in Ha'iku.
Family members told police the girls had gone rafting in an area known as "Tubes" in Ha'iku. The families contacted police about 9:30 p.m. yesterday when the girls failed to return home. Family members positively identified the girls after their bodies were recovered, police said.
Police said the girls were found in the water.
