Hayashi leads Aloha PGA event by three shots

Defending champion Kevin Hayashi opened with a 3-under-par 68 today to take a three-shot lead after the first round of the Aloha PGA Professional Championship and Stroke Play Championship.

The two events are being held at the same time at Royal Ka'anapali Course, with 51 Aloha Section PGA pros competing in the fourth major championship of the year. Hayashi is a three-time Stroke Play champion.

Ron Castillo Jr. is second, at 72, and brother Michael Castillo is another shot back. Larry Stubblefield (73) is first in the Senior Division, with Jeff Jackson two shots back. AJ Molitor shot 78 and is in first in Super Seniors.

Scores the first two days also count toward qualifying in the 41st PGA Professional National Championship, next summer in Georgia. The section gets three spots in the $550,000 event.

The 33rd Stroke Play Championship runs 54 holes, teeing off at 7 a.m. tomorrow and Wednesday. The purse is $18,000.
