No. 6 UCLA soccer team defeats visiting UH, 6-0

Advertiser Staff

Sophomore All-American Lauren Cheney tied a school record with four goals as the No. 6 UCLA blitzed Hawai'i, 6-0, yesterday in a non-conference women's soccer match at Drake Stadium on the UCLA campus.

Caitlyn Mac Kechnie and Danesha Adams also scored for the Bruins (4-1-2).

The Rainbow Wahine fell to 5-2-1 after giving up the most goals since a 7-0 loss to Brigham Young in 1998.

According to a UH release, the Rainbow Wahine played without three starters — senior midfielder Jessica Domingo, junior defender Tehane Higa and sophomore forward Ambree Ako. No reason was given for their absences.

Cheney, who had four goals coming into the match, scored in the 10th minute on a through ball from Christina DiMartino. Less than two minutes later, Cheney left-footed a shot into the far post after receiving a ball from Kylie Wright as the Bruins took a 2-0 lead into halftime.

SURFING

ANDY IRONS ADVANCES

Kaua'i's Andy Irons advanced to the third round of the Quiksilver Pro France yesterday at Hossegor, France.

Irons defeated Spain's Aritz Aranburu, 16.16-6.5, in yesterday's second round. Irons received a near-perfect score of 9.83 for making it through a long barrel in the closing minutes of the heat.

"The conditions were pretty touch and go," Irons said. "The tide got really high and there were not many good scoring waves out there. I think I had a 3.0 and a 4.0 with eight minutes to go and Aritz had some big scores in the first round so I knew it would be hard."

Irons, who is ranked No. 4 on the World Championship Tour, was the only Hawai'i surfer to complete a heat yesterday.

Three others — Bruce Irons, Fred Patacchia Jr., and Pancho Sullivan — have second-round heats upcoming. The Quiksilver Pro France is the seventh of 10 events on the 2007 World Championship Tour.

GODINEZ EARNS AWARD

Megan Godinez of Kane'ohe won the Schick Quattro Style Award at the Roxy Jam Cardiff women's longboard surfing contest yesterday.

The two-day event was held at Cardiff, Calif.

Current world champion Jen Smith of California won the contest.

Godinez, 16, was eliminated in the quarterfinals but received the award for her aggressive style.

"I am so surprised right now," she said. "The level of talent out here that I was up against was so amazing, so I am honored to have been chosen for this award."

Kelia Moniz tied for fifth place in the contest, and was the top Hawai'i finisher.

DIVISION II SOCCER

HILO BEATS HPU, 1-0

Jessica Carmona scored five minutes into overtime as Hawai'i-Hilo defeated Hawai'i Pacific, 1-0, Saturday in a Pacific West Conference women's match at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Carmona, who had three shots on goal, scored off an assist from Vanessa Butin to help the Vulcans improve to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the PacWest.

Veronica Ellman made five saves for the Sea Warriors (1-5, 0-1).

RUNNING

NIKE RAISES FUNDS

Todd Iacovelli and Sayuri Kusutani were the first to finish, but the real winners of yesterday's 8th annual Niketown 5K were the O'ahu schools that will receive more than $130,000 from the fundraiser.

As in past years, 100 percent of the entry fees for the 5K and the 1-mile kids run/walk will be donated to schools to support their play, physical education and athletic programs, and purchase play equipment.

The top fund-raising schools were: Ma'ema'e Elementary School (559 runners, $8,385 raised); Maryknoll Grade School (429, $6,435); St. Andrew's Priory (346, $5,190); Kaimuki Middle School (319, $4,785), and Kapolei High School (317, $4,755).

Iacovelli finished in 15 minutes, 1 second while Kusutani was the fastest female in 18:19.
