Gunshot fired in botched Maui burglary

Advertiser Staff

A botched burglary at a home in Huelo, Maui, last night sent two people to the hospital, one of them in critical condition from a gunshot wound.

Maui police officials said patrol officers responded about 8:45 p.m. to a report that a gunshot was heard coming from a residence on Door of Faith Road.

According to a preliminary investigation, a 29-year-old man and two boys, both 17, entered the residence allegedly intending to steal items from the home, police said.

A male occupant of the home, 43, confronted the intruders with a gun and at some point, a lone gunshot was fired, striking the adult intruder in the abdomen, police said.

Although he was shot, the man was able to use an object he found in the home to assault the occupant before fleeing with the two youths, police said.

Sometime later, a man with a single gunshot wound to the stomach was taken by ambulance to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room.

As of this morning, the man was undergoing surgery and was listed in critical condition, but is expected to recover, police said.

The occupant of the home was transported by ambulance to the Maui Memorial Medical Center's emergency room for treatment of severe multiple facial fractures. As of this morning, the occupant was scheduled to undergo surgery and was listed in satisfactory condition.

The two boys were later located and placed under arrest. They were subsequently released to their parent's custody.

The incident remains under investigation.
