Board seeks additional school money

Advertiser Staff

The state Board of Education's budget committee has recommended an additional $47.6 million in school operating expenses and $199 million in capital improvements for the next fiscal year.

The operating money would adjust the student spending formula to reduce class sizes in third grade, increase the money given to schools for the number of pre-school special education students enrolled, and add money for gifted and talented students. Another $5 million would go toward grants for middle schools that want to stress math.

The capital improvement money includes $75 million for school repair and maintenance projects.

The recommendation will go to the full board for approval at its Oct. 4 meeting in Honolulu.

If the board approves the recommendation, it will go to the Lingle administration, which will decide how much will end up in its budget request to the state Legislature next session.
