Stocks end up on news of tentative GM deal

Wall Street advanced Wednesday, encouraged by the United Auto Workers' tentative contract agreement with General Motors Corp., and by a report saying some investors are looking to buy significant stakes in Bear Stearns Cos. The New York Times named billionaire Warren Buffett as one interested investor.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 99.50, or 0.72 percent, to 13,878.15.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 8.21, or 0.54 percent, to 1,525.42.
The Nasdaq composite index rose 15.58, or 0.58 percent, to 2,699.03.
For the week:
The Dow is up 48.96, or 0.35 percent.
The S&P is down 0.33, or 0.02 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 27.81, or 1.04 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 1,415.00, or 11.35 percent.
The S&P is up 107.12, or 7.55 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 283.74, or 11.75 percent.
