MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Corey Beck, a starting guard on Arkansas' national championship team, was listed in fair condition at a hospital today, recovering from wounds after being shot during an attempted robbery.

Beck and a friend were shot by two would-be robbers early Sunday.

Beck, 36, and Timothy Wilkins, 35, were in a car when two men with masks and a shotgun approached them, police said.

Beck was shot in the hand and face but managed to drive his car to a fire station. He was taken to The Regional Medical Center in critical condition, but had been upgraded by today.

Wilkins was treated and released at Methodist University Hospital.

The would-be robbers fled.

Beck had 15 points and four assists in the Razorbacks' 76-72 victory over Duke in the 1994 national championship game. He led Arkansas in assists three straight seasons with a best of 5.31 per game as a senior in 1994-95. He is third on the career list with 483 behind Kareem Reid (748, 1996-99) and Lee Mayberry (729, 1989-92).
